The EU newcomers weigh its costs and benefits

A high-level roundtable co-organised by Friends of Europe and the European Development Platform

The economic crisis gripping Europe has thrown into sharp relief many of the issues surrounding the EU’s ‘big bang’ enlargement and future ones too. Attention is being focused on decisionmaking in a Union of 27 and rising, and on the influence or lack of it that the newcomers are able to exert. Other issues range from the expansion of the Schengen zone and free movement of people to the future of the EU budget. Moves by some larger member states to limit the scale of EU spending from 2014-20, and therefore their own contributions, are provoking growing tensions among newcomer states already reeling from the impact of the economic slowdown.

Round Table: Danube and European Territorial Cooperation

The roundtable with the topic “Danube and European Territorial Cooperation” took place at the headquarters of the Romanian Chamber for Commerce and Industry (CCIR) in Bucharest, on November 3d this year. Co-organizers of this event were the European Development Platform (EDP), the CCIR and the Romanian School of Business of CCIR. Among participants at this roundtable were members of the European Parliament, representatives of public authorities and foreign embassies (ex: Croatia, Moldova, Italy, Ukraine) and of business circles.
